This tapa represents the steps to the menstruation house. Fertility and menstruation are important aspects of Omie iconography. As in many more patrilineal and patriarchal cultures in PNG women removed themselves during menstruation because it was believed to be polluting. The Omie still practice some aspects of this tradition today, particularly in child birth.
